The newest hero in Overwatch is here. Echo, who was introduced this morning via Twitter, is the game's 32nd hero.
Echo was first introduced at BlizzCon 2018, during Overwatch's animated short, “Reunion”. Reunion was the introduction to Ashe, the game's 29th hero. Echo was then featured during BlizzCon 2019 in Overwatch 2's first cinematic trailer, "Zero Hour".
In the "Reunion" trailer, Echo was introduced at the end, with a bit of a tease for the "Zero Hour" trailer. Not much was revealed about Echo during that time. In the "Zero Hour" trailer, Echo is seen flying through the skies and raining down ammunition into the enemies below. This ability could be Echo's ultimate or a regular ability.
It was only a matter of time to see Echo in Overwatch someday. That day is now.
Echo was first teased on Twitter by the Overwatch team earlier this week. The tease featured a log by another character named Dr. Mina Liao, who is not a hero at this time. The teases continued until the official announcement of Echo.
Currently, there are 8 tanks, 7 supports, and 16 DPS heroes in the game. As of the time of this writing, there is no statement whether Echo will be a tank, support, or DPS. Overwatch's two previous heroes were Baptiste and Sigma, respectively. Going by the pattern, Echo could possibly be a DPS hero. Overwatch's previously released hero, Sigma, was playable back in July 2019. It has been over six months since Sigma's release.
The Overwatch team has been working diligently as they are working on Overwatch 2, plus new features to the game such as the Experimental card and hero pools. The game is in need of new content before Overwatch 2 gets an official release date. Echo will certainly hold up all Overwatch players in the meantime. There is no date when Echo will be released in the PTR and official servers.
