Riot Games' new tactical shooter, Valorant, has been all the rage in both the gaming and sports communities since its official announcement by its developer. Valorant will be free to play, and while it will have a battle pass for unlockable rewards as well as purchasable cosmetics, Riot Games will not be including loot boxes in any aspect of the game's reward system.
The confirmed cosmetics for Valorant are sprays and weapon skins, and can be unlocked through the battle pass in-game, but will also be able to be purchased for players who would rather spend money than time on an aesthetic upgrade. The guns in Valorant themselves may also be able to be upgraded in-game, but aside from what Executive Producer Anna Donlon told Polygon about the existence of multiple progression systems, nothing else has been revealed.
Valorant will also not be launching with any additional character skins. Skins have been a huge feature of personalization in League of Legends, as well as one of Riot Games' most profitable forms of microtransaction, but with Valorant introducing a cast of new characters never before seen on Summoner's Rift, the developer wants to make sure their new characters are easily recognizable.
Valorant was originally announced under a working title, Project A, as part of Riot Games' massive 10th anniversary announcement last fall. Valorant is projected for a summer release date, but specifics regarding the date and time of the title drop have yet to be made public.
