Faker on the Changed Meta: "I think it’s a good thing for LoL because it seems more like a strategy game than a laning game now."

On the 24th of June (KST), in the 2018 LCK Summer Split Day 12, SKT T1 shut out Jin Air Green Wings 2-0. It was their first win of the Summer Split after a hard 4-game losing streak. The following is the interview with Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok.

Q. It was the first win of this split for you. How do you feel?

We got the first win too late. I hope we win a lot so that this summer doesn’t go like the spring split. Although we got our first win, it was against the low ranked team, Jin Air. I think we should deliver good performance against a strong team like kt Rolster which we play against next.

Q. The players of SKT T1 was high in the solo queue ladder, but the performance in the competition wasn’t good. Why do you think that is?

Compared to the scrims, our official match results weren’t that good. I never thought that we would lose the first two matches like that. It’s hard to pick a single reason; there were problems everywhere, from our prowess to the changed meta.

Q. The meta changed drastically in 8.11. Do you think that’s a positive change, or do you think that change is cruel to pro gamers?

The pro gamers, especially the ADC players would have a hard time. However, I think it’s a good thing for LoL because it seems more like a strategy game than a laning game now.

Q. You’re playing in other lanes instead of mid lane recently.

The champion I played was something I’m used to and since I play in different positions during solo queue, it was alright. I can always play in other positions, so I think I’ll be able to prepare different strategies.

Q. In the changed meta, until the picks are locked in, you’ll never know which champion will go where. How does SKT T1 pick who will play which champion?

I think the biggest point is the how skilled the player is on that champion. Our coach doesn’t tell us to play which champion; we discuss who will play what. I think we’ll continue to have the player with the best skills on the champion play it.

Q. Did anything change during the losing streak?

Our team has a rather strong feedback time after the match. However, our head coach changed a bit after the losing streak. If we lose a game, rather than scolding us, he tries to bring up the players morale so that we can do better in the next game.

Q. You’ll be playing against kt Rolster in the next match.

I think no one will know until we play. Frankly, there’s a lot to go for us. Although we only have one day, we’ll prepare well and deliver good performance.

Q. How is the 10-man roster?

There weren’t that many strategies to practice in the last season, and all we used to practice was how we’ll do in the starting 3 minutes. I think the 10-man roster is good in the current meta because we need many different strategies.

Q. The rookie players played in the match against MVP. How were they?

I think they all did what they were capable of, considering it was their first match. However, I think we’ll need to see how they’ll do since they lost to a low-ranked team like us.

Q. What kind of player do you think Pirean is?

I think his style of play is different from mine. He’s practicing really hard; I think he practices the most in the team.

Q. You played many different champions in the Asian Games and ended the preliminaries at 1st place.

I think we had good results since everybody was soo good. Everybody was really determined and we all got along without trouble.

Q. Do you have any last comments?

There’s still a long way to go for us. I was kind of embarrassed since all other players that took part in the Asian Games are doing well. Still, I’m satisfied because I got MVP twice today, and that I’ve seen hope that we’ll do better from now on. I’ll make sure we deliver good performance to the fans who always cheer for us.
